Dental health is important to all horses including performance horses and pleasure ponies. Dental issues can cause your horse to be uncomfortable, have bit issues and / or lose weight. Routine dental care can help your horse stay healthy and happy.

We provide dentistry services including oral exams, power floatation* and extractions.

*For power floats on the farm we require a clean, dry area with power, as well as an overhanging beam (rafter, stall door, etc.) in order to lift the horse’s head up for the procedure. We offer all dentistry services at our clinic if you do not have these facilities on your farm.

It is important that veterinarians and farriers work together to ensure that your horse remains sound and performs atht their top level. This collaborative approach allows a combination of diagnostic techniques and practical experience to approach hoof care tailored to your horse's needs.

At Westhills, we work closely with farrier Jerome Park to ensure that your horse's farrier needs are met which may include therapeutic trimming and shoeing. Jerome has over 15 years of farrier experience, including working and traveling with the show Cavalia for several years.

Whether you are purchasing a new pony club horse or a performance horse, a pre-purchase exam can be a valuable tool that can help you to make an informed decision when deciding to purchase your new horse.

Pre-purchase exams include a complete physical exam as well as a soundness evaluation. Additional diagnostics and testing including x-rays, ultrasounds, laboratory/drug testing are available at an additional cost.

Please fill out the pre purchase form prior to booking your pre purchase exam. The form must be submitted to Westhills by email or fax before confirming an appointment

Everyone wants their horse to perform at their full potential. Lameness is one of the most common reasons that your horse may not be performing to their full ability.

A lameness evaluation includes a complete physical exam and a soundness exam (evaluation of your horse in motion, flexion tests and hoof tester application).

The shockwave triggers the body's own repair and healing response without trauma. Shockwave can be used alone or in combination with other treatments.

Reproduction services include:

  • Breeding Soundness Exam

  • Cycle Evaluation and Pregnancy Checks

  • Artificial Insemination

  • New Foal Exam

Breeding Soundness Exam: Thinking about breeding your mare? Preparing prior to breeding season increases the chances of getting pregnant. A breeding soundness exam includes a physical exam, an ultrasound, endometrial culture / cytology and biopsy samples.

Cycle Evaluation and Pregnancy Check: The ultrasound is a useful tool for following a mare's cycle in order to determine the appropriate time to breed. It can also diagnose pregnancies as early as 13 days after ovulation.

Artificial Insemination: Artificial Insemination is becoming a popular method of breeding in the equine world. Our team uses several tools such as portable ultrasound to determine the best time to inseminate your mare to maximize their chance of becoming pregnant. Advantages of artificial insemination include accurate breeding at ovulation, minimal risk of disease transmission, improved safety for your mare and handlers, and the ability to breed your prize mare to a winning stallion that is across the border.

New Foal Exam: Congratulations on your new foal!! We want your foal to have a healthy start to their life. Our New Foal Exams include complete physical exams on new foals, which allows us to determine the health of your brand new baby including colostrum levels, congenital deformities such as cleft palates and regular limb deformities, and umbilical issues. Our New Foal Exam can be tailored to your specific needs and concerns.

Stallion Collection: Westhills offers stallion collection for fresh cooled shipping and insemination.

Please contact the clinic for more details on our reproduction services or to set up an appointment.

Equine Chiropractic

Dr. Emily is a graduate of the Veterinary Chiropractic Learning Centre, the only accredited animal chiropractic school in Canada. She is a member of the College of Animal Chiropractors and is certified in Veterinary Chiropractic care as a Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapist (VSMT). Using Animal Chiropractic/ VSMT, Dr Emily has a unique and whole body approach to multiple issues including injuries, performance, lameness and preventative care.

Animal Chiropractic/VSMT is an alternative and complementary medicine that is based on a whole body approach in order to improve the health and wellness of your horse. The basis of Animal Chiropractic/VSMT is the relationship between structure (the spine) and function (the nervous system) and how these systems interact to affect health. This modality involves the diagnosis and management of mechanical musculoskeletal and nervous system conditions. Benefits of Animal Chiropractic include improved performance and quality of life, relief of pain and muscle tension, prevention of injuries and improved joint stiffness and range of motion. While Animal Chiropractic/VSMT is not a replacement for traditional veterinary medicine it can be used in conjunction for a comprehensive approach to the well being of your horse.

Westhills offer ambulatory services in Parkland County and surrounding areas. Our mobile units are equipped with:

  • A wide range of pharmaceuticals and vaccines

  • Portable digital radiography (X-ray) units

Medical acupuncture is a therapeutic method involving insertion of fine sterile needles and is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture. Medical acupuncture involves knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology with an emphasis on evidence based medicine. The main effect of needling is activation of nerve fibers near a point resulting in changes throughout the entire body.  A thorough history, physical and myofascial exam and often times a lameness exam allows the veterinarian to determine the location and source of dysfunction and comfort and from there, formulate an appropriate treatment plan. There are a wide range of benefits including treatment of pain, inflammation, neurologic problems, digestive and musculoskeletal conditions.
